Step By Step GRE Practice Problems

I helped many Korean students who spoke English as a Second Language achieve significant improvements in scores thanks to shortcuts and techniques I developed (after 4 years of studying for the LSAT) to get a 99th percentile on the June 2016 LSAT (my 5th try). Below, Iââ¬â¢ll provide my shorthand notes for the free GRE Practice Test available in the link below. The GRE can be difficult -- but please remember that if you speak English as a first language, youââ¬â¢re in a much more advantageous position than many GRE test-takers around the world. Below you'll find my mental mapping (step-by-step instructions) for section 4 (Verbal) Odd # Question Explanations Symbol Key Symbols Rectangle = Key Clue Circle = Important Solutions Q1 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å":â⬠and a circle around ââ¬Å"not outspokenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rather than.â⬠The colon is the key clue. What function does a colon serve on GRE? To expand upon a point. ââ¬Å"not outspokenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rather thanâ⬠tell you that itââ¬â¢s parallel construction. What question type is this? Synonym + Parallel Construction The blank should match ââ¬Å"outspoken on political matters.â⬠(A) precisely matches that definition. Q3 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"has grownâ⬠and ââ¬Å":â⬠What question type is this? Cause and Effect. Now, put a circle around ââ¬Å"critics chargeâ⬠and the second ââ¬Å"_______â⬠The two should be similar in meaning due to the placement of ââ¬Å":â⬠Which word comes closest to criticism? (E), panned, means to criticize harshly. (D) and (F) donââ¬â¢t work because thatââ¬â¢s not what critics do. When you see ââ¬Å":â⬠rely on the first clause to deduce the meaning of the second. The first sentence must present a cause for a delay in inspection. What relationship with ââ¬Å"outsideâ⬠influence would cause such a delay? If youââ¬â¢re unaware of outside influence, it would have no effect. If youââ¬â¢re irritated at outside influence, what effect would the influence have? If youââ¬â¢re susceptible, then that presents a cause for delaying an inspection. Thatââ¬â¢s what makes (A) and (E) the correct answers. Q5 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"Becauseâ⬠and ââ¬Å":â⬠What kind of a question type is this? It is Cause and Effect. We know this due to ââ¬Å"becauseâ⬠in the beginning. Now, the colon (ââ¬Å":â⬠) should be thought of as extended description. Circle ââ¬Å"asâ⬠and ââ¬Å"misledâ⬠in the second clause. The second blank should correspond to ââ¬Å"misledâ⬠due to parallel construction. ââ¬Å"beguileâ⬠is the only choice that comes close in meaning. The first blank must now be a cause for misleading someone. ââ¬Å"quirkinessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"maladroitnessâ⬠are similar in connotation (inadequate). When two words are similar, theyââ¬â¢re usually both incorrect. (B), ââ¬Å"preeminence,â⬠here has the connotation of winning over someone. Q7 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"come to seemâ⬠The first blank is an antonym ââ¬Å"come to seemâ⬠on GRE indicates changed impression, usually the opposite. Circle ââ¬Å"profound.â⬠The first blank should be the opposite of ââ¬Å"profound.â⬠ââ¬Å"banal,â⬠meaning boring, is the opposite of profound. Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"entirely from.â⬠The second blank is a cause and effect When you have something come ââ¬Å"entirely fromâ⬠something else, thatââ¬â¢s important. (d) is the only choice that comes close in meaning. Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"the moreâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the moreâ⬠in the last clause. The third blank is another cause and effect Circle ââ¬Å"uncoverâ⬠ââ¬â these are new material of great importance that has yet to be studied. What would be the effect of such fresh new material? You would know much less about your subject, which is precisely what (g) captures. Q9 This is a primary purpose question. Primary purpose is identified by looking at the main point of each paragraph. The MP of the first paragraph is line 16 ââ¬â 21. The MP of the second paragraph is line 28 ââ¬â 30. Next, identify the common denominator. The MPs of the two paragraphs concern what Carnell argues. Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"one authorââ¬â¢s viewâ⬠in (B). Remember that the correct answer must be grounded in a particular point in the passage. Q11 This is a fact question. Expect the passage to say X and the correct answer to say something categorically synonymous. Look at line 39 ââ¬â 45. Carnell believes that Behn ââ¬Å"questionedâ⬠a view. That matches with ââ¬Å"should not replicate.â⬠Circle ââ¬Å"passive obedience to the nationââ¬â¢s kingâ⬠That matches with ââ¬Å"the hierarchical order.â⬠(B) does not repeat verbatim what the passage says. Instead, it presents categorically synonymous terms. GRE always does this. Always be on a lookout for categorically synonymous terms. Q13 This is a fact question. (A) is found in lines 7-8. (B) is found in lines 2-3. Q15 This is an assumption question. Look for a shift in scope/certainty/quantity from premise to conclusion. The assumption will result from that shift. Put a circle around ââ¬Å"much higherâ⬠in the last sentence, the conclusion. Put a circle around ââ¬Å"attracted toâ⬠in the second sentence, the premise. What is the shift? All we know from the premise is that something attractive to deer will go up. From that, the argument concludes the number of deaths will go up. Always keep in mind that the number of assumptions is infinite. Assumption here is simply any statement that necessarily results from the conclusion. For the number of deaths to rise ââ¬Å"much higher,â⬠these has to be a ââ¬Å"significantâ⬠population to begin with. Thatââ¬â¢s how we know (d) is an assumption ââ¬â a true statement begotten from the conclusion. Think of it this way: Premise: A new skate park targeting teenagers will be built. Conclusion: The number of teenage skaters injured will significantly increase. What if teenagers in the area all move to a different neighborhood? The number of true statements that necessarily result from the conclusion is infinite. Q17 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"when in reality.â⬠This is an antonym question type. Put a circle around ââ¬Å"limited to.â⬠The blank should be opposite in meaning to ââ¬Å"limited to.â⬠ubiquitous (C) and universal (E) both express expansion and are therefore correct. Q19 Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å":â⬠This is a synonym question type. The second clause expands upon the meaning of the first. Circle ââ¬Å"if the other doubtedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"refrained from.â⬠The two circles define their relationship: check and balance. (A) and (D) are the only choices that correspond in meaning. Q21 This is a Fact question. Put an A and a circle around it next to line 16 ââ¬â Authorââ¬â¢s view. This short passage is designed to reject a view, as line 16 indicates. Where does that view first appear? It appears directly in line 3. Therefore, (A) is the correct answer. Q23 This is a Vocabulary question. Your answer must rely on contextual clues. Put a rectangle around ââ¬Å"butâ⬠and replace it with ââ¬Å"andâ⬠Put a circle around ââ¬Å"misledâ⬠and replace it with ââ¬Å"persuadeâ⬠Youââ¬â¢re looking for something that was not credible and also something that was enough to make it persuade people. ââ¬Å"excellentâ⬠(C) and ââ¬Å"eminentâ⬠(D) look like great choices. But do they go well with ââ¬Å"weakly foundedâ⬠? If theyââ¬â¢re so ââ¬Å"excellentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"eminent,â⬠how can they said to be ââ¬Å"weakly foundedâ⬠? The only choice that goes along with ââ¬Å"weakly foundedâ⬠and is still enough to persuade people is ââ¬Å"dramatic,â⬠(A) Q25 This is a Fact question. Circle ââ¬Å"relentless frequencyâ⬠in lines 1-2. Circle ââ¬Å"proportionâ⬠in (B). We already know that there are many portraits showing the stance. Circle ââ¬Å"explanationâ⬠in the question. We need an explanation, not another restating of the fact regarding frequency.
